Love, or Rock N Roll

June 10, 2011

Maybe you have kids.

Maybe you’ve heard of The Kissing Hand.

If you haven’t, it’s a touching little story about this raccoon who eats her young. See? She’s already nibbling on his fingers on the cover.

I’m just kidding! It’s a story about this baby raccoon named Chester and how he loves his mom. If you’re sentimental, it may make you cry.

Now, here’s where it gets tricky. The story uses the very common signal for “I Love You” in American Sign Language.

But somewhere along the way, this kid at school told The Boy that it means, “I Wanna Rock & Roll All Night”, which can be confusing.

Those in the know would say there is a distinct difference.

Thumb Out = I Love You;

Thumb Out

I Love You

Thumb In = Rock & Roll! (All night and party every day!)

Thumb In

Rock & Roll!

But how do you explain that to a 3 year old boy that can’t correctly do either one? Any suggestions?

Also, in case there was any confusion, this is the appropriate way to sign “You” in American Sign Language. No ambiguity there!

I can’t explain it but I find that very funny.

    I got this book for Robert years ago and yes i cry when I read the inscription I wrote to him as well as the story. It is a very good one for mama/daddies and their babies

    • I’m sure Robert shares this information with all his USMC buddies now. They’d really appreciate knowing he has a soft and kind heart.
